Beleaguered cricketer Jesse Ryder was dismissed for a golden duck for Otago to compound his dropping from the New Zealand team for disciplinary reasons.
To make matters worse, the 29-year-old's team lost their Plunket Shield match to Central Districts and fell further behind leaders Canterbury with two rounds to play.
New Zealand coach Mike Hesson told journalists on Monday morning that Ryder wouldn't be considered for the second Test against India as punishment for a late night out on the eve of the first Test in Auckland last week.
Less than two hours later, Ryder fell first ball to be part of a hat-trick bowled by Central seamer Kieran Noema-Barnett in the eighth over of Otago's innings in Nelson.
Otago never recovered and, despite 147 from Black Caps allrounder James Neesham, they were dismissed for 277, handing the home side a win by 134 runs.
