Form teams collide in World Cup final

Australia host the historical advantage but it's all-square in recent form compared to World Cup final combatants New Zealand.

The World Cup final is not just a clash of the co-hosts, but a meeting of cricket's form teams.

Four-time champions Australia meet first-time finalists New Zealand in Melbourne on Sunday, both carrying expectation built on sustained success.

Australia's 95-run crushing of India in the semi-final at Sydney was the 17th win of their last 20 completed one-day internationals.

That mirrors the record of New Zealand following the Black Caps' four-wicket thriller against South Africa in Auckland two days earlier.

The next best record for any team is India, who have won 14 of their last 20 ODIs.

For more pure form, New Zealand hold the edge, currently riding a 10-game winning streak.

Australia are nine from 10, their only loss coming at Eden Park on February 28 when the Black Caps prevailed in a low-scoring one-wicket cliffhanger.

The trans-Tasman record is lop-sided.

Australia have 85 wins to New Zealand's 35 in completed games while it's 38-18 on Australian soil and 14-4 at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, although New Zealand have won three of the last five there.

Australia lead 12-8 in ODIs over the last five years.

14 - India (2)

12 - South Africa (3)

11 - Sri Lanka (5)

8 - West Indies (8), Bangladesh (9)

7 - Pakistan (7), England (6)

2 - Zimbabwe (10)
