The trial of former Chadian leader Hissene Habre is underway in Senegal.
The 72-year-old is accused of crimes against humanity, war crimes and torture committed during his eight year rule from 1982 to 1990.
The trial is the first in the world in which the courts of one country are prosecuting the former ruler of another for alleged human rights crimes.
It is expected to last three months, with about 100 witnesses and victims expected to testify.
Reed Brody is with the rights group Human Rights Watch and was at the opening of the case in Dakar.
