Former Liberal National Party MP Chris Davis says he is discussing running for Labor in the seat of Ashgrove and taking on Queensland Premier Campbell Newman at the next state election.

Dr Davis says he has informally discussed his options with ALP state secretary Anthony Chisholm.

"All we've done is open the investigation of the potential, nothing else," he told the ABC on Friday.

Dr Davis, who just resigned from the LNP, said he understood that former Labor member for Ashgrove, Kate Jones, is still the party's choice to run against Mr Newman.

But if she chose not to run he would be happy to do so.

"As I understand it she's making a decision in relation to work-life balance, having a very young family," he said.

"It's not a matter of (running) against the premier, it's just that I have an affinity with the people of Ashgrove having been the adjacent electorate," he said.

The resignation of Dr Davis, a former assistant health minister and director of geriatric medicine at Prince Charles Hospital, sparked a by-election in the Brisbane based seat of Stafford.

The LNP suffered an 18.6 per cent swing against it at Saturday's poll, raising fears over the safety of Mr Newman's neighbouring seat at the next election.
