Jerome Kersey, a popular forward on the Portland Trail Blazers' NBA title-contending teams in the 1990s, has died at the age of 52.
The team confirmed Kersey had died, but no cause of death was immediately confirmed.
The Oregonian newspaper reported that emergency personnel were called to Kersey's home on Wednesday evening and he was later pronounced dead in hospital.
"Today we lost an incredible person and one of the most beloved players to ever wear a Trail Blazers uniform," team owner Paul Allen said.
"My thoughts and condolences are with the Kersey family. He will be missed by all of us. It's a terrible loss."
Kersey played 17 seasons in the NBA, 11 with the Blazers from 1984-95 after they selected him in the second round of the 1984 draft.
He is fifth on the Blazers' all-time scoring list and before his career ended also played with Golden State, the Lakers, Seattle, San Antonio and Milwaukee.
He won an NBA title with the Spurs in 1999.
