Former Queensland Origin star Jason Smith has been charged with trafficking cocaine in southeast Queensland.

The 42-year-old was arrested on Monday along with 34-year-old prominent local restaurateur Jason Wood.

The arrests in Toowoomba follow a six-month investigation by Queensland police and the Crime and Corruption Commission, police said.

The pair are alleged to have trafficked 280 grams of cocaine between June and December 2014.

Smith owns a local Toowoomba pub, the Mill Street Tavern, while Wood operates the nearby Olive Branch restaurant.

Smith, who played 15 games for Queensland between 1994 and 2000, also represented Australia and won a premiership with the Bulldogs.

He moved to Toowoomba in 2007 after his NRL career with the North Queensland Cowboys finished.

Smith notched up 289 first-grade games during his career that spanned 17 seasons. He also played for Canberra and a stint in the UK with Hull FC.

Southern Region crime co-ordinator Detective Superintendent Paul Schmidt said Wood would also face a cocaine possession charge after his vehicle was stopped at the Gold Coast on December 20 last year, The Chronicle reports.

Smith and Wood are due to appear before Toowoomba Magistrates Court on February 11.
