Former NSW police commissioner dies

Former NSW Police Commissioner Cecil "Cec" Abbott has died aged 89.

Former NSW Police Commissioner Cecil "Cec" Abbott, credited with boosting drug law enforcement and undercover police operations, has died aged 89.

Mr Abbott, who died on Wednesday morning, was the state's 16th police commissioner between December 1981 and August 1984 after joining the force as a cadet in 1941.

He was instrumental in forming the Police Undercover Branch and the formation of covert police sites.

NSW Police Commissioner Andrew Scipione paid tribute to Mr Abbott on Wednesday, saying he made a significant contribution to the force during 43 years of service.

"It is widely accepted that the foundations of contemporary drug law enforcement nationally can be attributed to his leadership and commitment throughout his dedicated service to the people of New South Wales.
