Former player points blame at Manly office

Former Kiwi half Isaac John, who played reserve grade for Manly in 2016, says the Sea Eagles issues off the field have been persistent for some time.

Former Kiwi player Isaac John claims his former club Manly's long run of on-field success has only covered up the NRL club's off-field woes.

Manly remained quiet on the future of Trent Barrett on Wednesday, after reports emerged Tuesday night the mentor was set to walk out on the club at the end of the season.

Barrett's issues are believed to be centred around a lack of resources and support at the club, after having to operate without a recruitment manager this year.

John, who played 35 NRL games for the Warriors and Penrith between 2009 and 2015 before following Barrett to Manly for one year in reserve grade in 2016, said the club's issues started with the front office and owner Scott Penn.

"The success or failure of a team or business starts from the top PERIOD," he tweeted on Tuesday night in response to a story of Barrett's departure.

"Was crazy the difference between Penrith and Manly and how poorly they were run.

"Always have had class players that were (there that) have served as band aids.

"Where's the accountability from the owners?"

It comes after Manly chief executive Lyall Gorman confirmed last week the club was in the process of assessing applications for a recruitment manager and considering implementing a director of football.

The club has already employed a new football manager, with former Canberra manager John Bonasera taking over from the outgoing Gareth Holmes immediately upon the latter's departure to Canterbury.
