The West Australian opposition has confirmed former Kevin Rudd staffer Patrick Gorman has become its state secretary after Simon Mead resigned before his contract expired.

"He will play an important role in the 2016 federal election campaign and in helping elect a McGowan Labor government in 2017," WA Labor leader Mark McGowan said on Thursday.

It has been reported Mr Mead was forced from the position after falling out with Mr McGowan and losing the support of left faction union United Voice, which has backed Mr Gorman.
