Former Seek exec Catapults into CEO role

Former Seek executive and current Richmond AFL club Joe Powell will become chief executive of ASX-listed sports tech firm Catapult.

ASX-listed sports tech firm Catapult has hired former Seek executive and Richmond Football Club director Joe Powell as chief executive.

Mr Powell, who led Seek's employment and education businesses and has also held executive positions at Optus, will take over from co-founder Shaun Holthouse on May 1.

Mr Holthouse will take up the newly created role of global head of strategy.

Catapult's performance-tracking wearables are used across the sports world by championship-winning sides, from Real Madrid and the Denver Broncos to the AFL's Western Bulldogs and NRL's Cronulla Sharks.

"Catapult is the clear global leader in a category with less than 20 per cent market penetration, so there is still a big growth opportunity in the core business alone," Mr Powell said.

"But when you consider the potential for Catapult to extend leadership in elite sports to the adjacent sub-elite and consumer markets, the growth opportunity is enormous."

Mr Powell has been an adviser at Catapult since September.

Seek co-founder and current AFL commissioner Paul Bassat backed the appointment.

"Throughout his time at Seek, it was clear Joe was an outstanding leader - he has great people skills, a keen grasp of strategy and a great ability to execute," Mr Bassat said.

Catapult shares were up five per cent at $2.10 at 1128 AEST on Friday.
