Former sevens star impressing for Waratahs

Former Olympic rugby sevens star Cam Clark is proving a revelation for the NSW Waratahs, but modestly says he's still a work in progress in 15-a-side rugby.

Cam Clark doesn't mind playing fullback, wing or even being deployed as a decoy fall guy - so long as he's in the NSW Waratahs starting side.

In an otherwise disappointing season, the former sevens star has proven a revelation for the NSW Waratahs since making the switch to 15-a-side rugby in 2017.

After debuting at fullback, Clark made the successful transition to the wing last month, showing lightning pace in scoring a length-of-the-field try against the Kings before shining in Saturday night's thrilling win over the Queensland Reds.

But it was Clark's unselfish play without the ball that impressed most in Brisbane.

In a beautifully executed set play, Clark ran a superb decoy line to fool the Reds defence and allow Waratahs playmaker Bernard Foley to instead pick up Michael Hooper for a five-pointer under the sticks.

"I took a couple of shots in the ribs, but I guess that's part of the play," Clark said.

"I'm there as a decoy for that play or still an option to get the ball, but ideally you wants 'Hoops' to go through."

The former Olympic and Commonwealth Games sevens ace said putting his body on the line for the Waratahs came with the new job.

"You stand up and see the try. You don't really think about what's happened beforehand," he said.

"Yeah I was just happy pretty happy to see him get over the line."

Clark's transformation from a centre in sevens has been even more stunning considering he can't recall even starting a 15-a-side game in the past five years.

(I've played) maybe five games off the bench for Norths (in Sydney club rugby), so not a whole lot," the 24-year-old said.

"Once I first started training with the (Waratahs) guys, there was definitely a lot to take in and I'm definitely nowhere near there yet.

"There's still a lot I'm picking up every training run so there's a lot of improvement to come.

"The more I can play, the better I'll get. It's definitely a step by step progression for sure."
