Former Telstra chief executive David Thodey, who publicly said his salary was too big to justify, took home $14.5 million in his last year the job.

Mr Thodey's paypacket increased by $1.7 million in 2014/15, despite stepping down in May after six years at the helm of Australia's largest telco.

The figure was released alongside Telstra's full year results, which showed a one per cent slide in full year profit to $4.23 billion and a two per cent increase in underlying earnings.

His take-home pay of $14.5 million included $7.5 million in long-term incentives, fixed remuneration of $2.65 million and short-term incentives of $4.3 million.

New chief executive Andy Penn, who was previously the company's chief financial officer, received $4.08 million for the year.

Mr Thodey's paypacket makes him one of the highest paid chief executives in Australia for 2014/15, though he said in April that his salary was indefensible when compared to that of other employees.

"I get paid a lot of money [and] my options, should they vest, are worth tens of millions of dollars," he told Fairfax Media at the time.

"But I can't sit here and defend my salary against all the guys who are out there working every day and I wouldn't try to.

"I think there's a real issue with income disparity between what an average person gets and some of the really big salaries."

During Mr Thodey's tenure, Telstra shares more than doubled to hit 13-year highs.
