Former Victorian emergency services minister Jane Garrett has announced she is fighting breast cancer and will take time off to recover.

The Labor MP for Brunswick - who resigned earlier this year over the controversial firefighters dispute - announced the news on Facebook on Thursday.

"I have recently joined many other women in a fight against breast cancer," Ms Garrett wrote.

"After a successful operation last week I will be taking some time off for treatment and recovery."

Ms Garrett said she expected to be back at as soon as possible early next year.

Permier Daniel Andrews on Thursday tweeted: "Our thoughts and prayers are with @Jane_GarrettMP and her family during this difficult time."

Mr Andrews and Ms Garrett clashed earlier this year over the CFA's enterprise agreement that's yet to be finalised.

Ms Garrett quit cabinet in June rather than back the deal which she claimed gave the United Firefighters Union too much power.

She's since accused union boss Peter Marshall of bullying.

Volunteer firefighters last week dropped a Victorian Supreme Court challenge to the pay deal but predicted the dispute could be back before the Federal Court in a matter of months.

Any clauses that fall foul of the Turnbull government's October amendments to the Fair Work Act could be challenged in the Fair Work Commission and, subsequently, the courts.
