Fortescue Metals Group and contractor Inline Engineering Services have been charged over an incident which led to a worker having both his legs amputated.

Bevan Coutts' legs were crushed as he was helping to remove a gearbox from a train at Fortescue's Anderson Point Port loading facility near Port Hedland on July 8, 2011.

Mr Coutts was caught between a hydraulic arm and a steel structure.

The WA Department of Mines and Petroleum has charged Inline Engineering Services and The Pilbara Infrastructure, a subsidiary of Fortescue Metals Group, with failing to ensure Mr Coutts's safety was not adversely affected by the work being undertaken.

Court documents were posted to the two companies on Monday.

"Mr Coutts suffered an immediate amputation of his left leg, and crush injuries to his right leg, which was later medically amputated," the WA Department of Mines said.

A hearing is listed to be heard in the South Hedland Magistrates Court for September 30.
