Fortescue Metals Group has increased the amount of iron ore it estimates is located at one of its projects in the Pilbara by more than 77 per cent.

The world's fourth largest iron ore miner has announced a 1.16 billion tonne addition to its Greater Solomon mineral resource, to 2.66 billion tonnes.

That takes the total mineral resource for the company's Solomon Hub, which includes its Firetail and Kings Valley project, to over 4.5 billion tonnes.

The company said it would now evaluate the possibility of transporting the additional ore to its existing ore processing facilities.
