Four charged with lighting fires in NSW

A 52-year-old man has been charged after allegedly igniting a bushfire in northern NSW the same day firefighters were battling more than 80 blazes across NSW.

A man is behind bars accused of starting a fire that burnt through 12 hectares of NSW bushland.

The 52-year-old is alleged to have deliberately lit the blaze on a property on the Bruxer Highway at Tabulam, near Casino, before it spread to nearby bushland on Wednesday.

He was refused bail after being charged on Thursday with intentionally causing a fire and being reckless to its spread. He is due to appear at Casino Local Court on October 3.

Three teenagers were also charged with lighting a fire on Wednesday which was fortunately extinguished before it made it to bushland.

The trio, all aged 16, allegedly built a fire at the base of a cliff at Blaxland about 4pm and then failed to properly smother it when questioned by local residents, police say.

They are due to appear at a children's court on September 6.
