Another four people have died from the flu in NSW and a further 14 aged care facilities have suffered outbreaks as the season appears to hit its peak.
NSW Health says there were an additional 6234 cases of the flu in the week to July 7, bringing the year-to-date total to 43,000.
There have been 70 deaths in NSW so far in 2019.
Director of communicable disease Vicky Sheppeard on Thursday urged people to observe hygiene precautions and said it wasn't too late to get a flu shot.
"While we think we're at the peak of the season we think there will probably be at least another six to eight weeks of flu activity - so if you're not yet vaccinated it could still give you some good protection," she told reporters in Sydney.
Dr Sheppeard said the numbers seemed high for the time of year because the flu season started early, but it was shaping up to be moderate compared to previous seasons.
She reminded people to avoid visiting aged care homes when sick, with 14 influenza outbreaks reported this week and 126 this year.
"Unfortunately, much of the burden of flu this year is falling upon the elderly," she said.
