Fourth lay day called in Fiji

Seven Australian surfers could have to wait until next week for their third-round battles after low swells forced another lay day at the Fiji Pro.

The world's best male surfers have been forced to sit out a fourth consecutive day at the Fiji Pro after low swells again forced a lay day to be called.

Waves again failed to reach over the one-metre mark on Friday morning at Cloudbreak, as World Surf League organisers conceded the competition was unlikely to restart until the middle of next week.

"We have small surf, strong winds and heavy rain so competition is off again today," commissioner Kieren Perrow said.

"We are tracking a promising swell for next week and we are holding out for that. We will come back tomorrow to reassess the conditions and make the next call."

While the swell had originally been expected to increase early in the week, that forecast has now been postponed until next Wednesday.

If organisers opt to sit back and wait until then, it will leave them with a three-day window to sneak in the six remaining rounds before the event closes on Friday.

Australian Matt Banting will compete against 2014 world champion Gabriel Medina in the first heat of the third round when surfing does resume, before Mick Fanning takes on Adam Melling in an all-Aussie clash.
