A Saturday stumble that opened the door for Adam Scott to win the 2016 Honda Classic is fuelling Rickie Fowler's charge at this year's event.

Fowler was hot on the heels of Australian Scott at the halfway mark of the US PGA Tour event at PGA National last year, but a third-round 74 cruelled his chances.

The California native finished tied for sixth place, six shots behind Scott.

For the second consecutive year, the American world No.14 has carded a pair of 66s and on Friday climbed to third place at eight-under-par, one shot back of the lead held by Americans Wes Bryan and Ryan Palmer.

"I feel like it's time for me to start finishing off some more events when I am in this position," said Fowler.

"I'm in a great spot and definitely feel like I'm ready to go get this job done here.

"I'm looking forward to this weekend; a place, on a golf course I feel comfortable."

The 28-year-old Fowler - winless on the US PGA Tour since September 2015 - says he's restored confidence in his game with stellar results in the 2017 season.

Fowler has four top-10 results, including a runner-up finish at the golf World Cup in Melbourne and a tie for fourth at the Phoenix Open earlier in February.

"I'm comfortable with the game right now; it's kind of just been trending the right direction," said Fowler.

"Mentally, I can definitely get a bit better but I'm swinging it great."
