Fox claims maiden K1 World Cup title

Jessica Fox has won her first World Cup title in K1 despite a tough final event in Spain.

A missed gate has cost Jessica Fox any chance of a K1 medal at the canoe slalom World Cup finals but it was not enough to deny her the overall title.

Fox went into the World Cup finals in La Seu d'Urgell, Spain, with a lead of 42 points in the K1 but with double points on offer it all came down to the final race.

She posted the fastest raw time but finished last after a 50-second penalty.

It was enough, however, for the Australian to secure 303 points overall and clinch the first K1 World Cup title of her career.

She pipped Saturday's event winner, Germany's Ricarda Funk, by just one point.

"It's been an incredible season with five finals out of five races this season (in the K1), four medals and three gold at the beginning of the season," Fox said.

"I have another race tomorrow and I've got a lot to learn before the World Champs and I can take all these learning with me to Rio."

On Sunday, Fox will have the chance to secure another World Cup title in the C1 after having won all five women's world cup titles in the discipline this year.

In other Australian K1 overall results, Ros Lawrence finished eighth and and Kate Eckhardt 33rd.

Fox will have the chance to add another World Cup title in the C1 to her long list of accolades on Sunday, going into the final with a 66 point lead over Austria's Viktoria Wolffhardt, after having won all five women's C1 world cup titles this year.

2018 Final World Cup Standings K1

1. Jessica Fox (AUS) 303

2. Ricarda Funk (GER) 302

3. Corinna Kuhnle (AUT) 285

8. Rosalyn Lawrence (AUS) 177
