Jess Fox has successfully defended her C1 title at the Canoe Slalom World Championships at the Deep Creek course in the United States.

The 20-year-old Fox went into the final as the second fastest qualifier and, despite picking up two penalties for gate touches, finished almost six seconds ahead of Great Britain's Mallory Franklin.

Fellow Sydney paddler Lucien Delfour finished fifth in the men's K1 final after going into the race as the top qualifier.

Delfour was able to execute a clean run but was just over three seconds behind Frenchman Boris Neveu.

Fox won her first World title 12 months ago in Prague, but had battled indifferent form on this year's World Cup circuit.

The Deep Creek course in Maryland provided plenty of challenges for the paddlers, with no competitor able to post a clean run.

Fox will also compete in the semi-finals of the K1, the event in which she won silver at the London Olympics.
