One of Australia's richest men, shopping centre magnate Frank Lowy, has undergone brain surgery for an injury likely sustained in his fall from the podium at the A-League soccer grand final.

The 84-year-old Westfield founder underwent surgery in Europe last week for subdural haematoma - a blood clot on the brain - after feeling unwell during a holiday.

In a statement, Westfield said the injury was most likely sustained during Mr Lowy's highly-publicised podium fall in May.

He is now out of hospital and expected to make a full recovery.

Westfield said Mr Lowy will return to Australia following a short convalescence.

Mr Lowy, who is the chairman of Westfield and the Football Federation of Australia, fell from the podium at the A-League grand final in May after stumbling as he went to present the championship trophy to Melbourne Victory coach Kevin Muscat.

He got to his feet soon after his fall and completed the ceremony.

He was initially cleared of any serious injury.
