John Howard says it is inevitable and a little unfair that former prime minister Malcolm Fraser will be most remembered for his role in the 1975 dismissal.

By blocking supply, Mr Fraser precipitated the most notorious event in Australian political history: the dismissal of the Whitlam government by Governor-General John Kerr.

Mr Howard told ABC TV that "although inevitable, it's a bit unfair" that Mr Fraser would be most associated with the tumultuous events of 1975.

"Because the early years of his government were very successful," said Mr Howard, who was treasurer in the Fraser government prior to becoming prime minister in 1996.

"He did bring the rate of growth of government spending down. He did restore a sense of calm and predictability to the affairs of government."

Mr Fraser died on Friday at the age of 84.
