A frustrated Henry Frayne has finished sixth in a stunning men's long jump competition at the Diamond League athletics meet in Rome.
Reigning world and Commonwealth champion Luvo Manyonga from South Africa won the event with a huge leap of 8.58m - the biggest in the world this year.
Juan Miguel Echevarria from Cuba pushed Manyonga all the way before being forced to settle for second spot with a personal best of 8.53m.
"Today my motivation was big," said Manyonga.
"The Diamond League is very important for me, because there is no major competition this year.
"I met Echevarria the last time at the world indoors, where he beat me.
"So I wanted to compete against him and give back."
Frayne's best jump of 8.15m came in the second round and was 19cm short of the PB he set while claiming silver at the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games.
"Very frustrating competition," tweeted the 28-year-old Queenslander.
"I felt great, the atmosphere was great and I should have jumped big but I am jumping 8m comfortably and easily.
"My body feels better with every competition."
Fellow Australian Ryan Gregson was 12th in the 1500m won by Kenyan world and Commonwealth silver medallist Timothy Cheruiyot, in a 2018 world-leading time of three minutes 31.22 seconds.
Gregson took the race on and was in fifth spot with a lap to go before fading to 12th in 3:38.85.
