Adelaide football fans will have to pay for their train tickets this weekend with the free Footy Express cancelled because drivers will be on strike.

The Rail, Tram and Bus Union has imposed a ban on overtime, forcing Adelaide Metro to cancel the 28 special train services for Saturday night's AFL clash between the Adelaide Crows and the Brisbane Lions.

Trains will run to their regular weekend schedules because of the strike, the Department of Planning, Transport and Infrastructure said on Thursday.

"While we will run as many trains as possible, we will be unable to cater for the additional demand of a Saturday night footy game," DPTI chief operating officer Paul Gelston said.

"We would encourage footy fans to consider alternative forms of transport, such as car-sharing."

Mr Gelston said extra Adelaide Oval bus services would operate to help accommodate footy fans.

"However, please also be aware that buses and trams are also likely to be running at capacity, so be patient and consider alternatives," he said.

Comment has been sought from the Rail, Tram and Bus Union.
