Canberrans will be able to surf the web in public places without running down their mobile phone data allowances under a new free Wi-Fi plan.

ACT Chief Minister Katy Gallagher says Canberra will be home to Australia's largest free outdoor public network. She says the service will begin in the city's CBD this year.

"Free Wi-Fi will then roll out in other town centres and commercial precincts to deliver the benefits of greater connectivity across the ACT," she said in a speech on Thursday.

The service is part of a $4.4 million plan to turn Canberra into a "truly digital city", she said.
