New Year's Eve revellers in Adelaide will enjoy a dazzling fireworks display, free public transport and a big night of sporting contests.

Thousands of people are expected to descend on Elder Park on Wednesday night for a family-friendly night of live music and fireworks over the River Torrens.

Beachgoers at Semaphore and Glenelg will bring in the new year with rides and games, live entertainment and fireworks, on what's expected to be a cool but dry evening.

Sports fans will have their work cut out for them, with Adelaide set to host two big clashes.

The Adelaide Strikers and Hobart Hurricanes will face off in a Big Bash League T20 cricket showdown at a sold-out Adelaide Oval.

Across town at Hindmarsh Stadium, third-placed Adelaide United will take on fourth-placed Wellington Phoenix in the A-League.

Partygoers will don their best fluoro for an old-school rave at the Old Adelaide Gaol, while Adelaide Casino's Chandelier Bar hosts an all-white party.

Revellers won't be forced to stumble home, with the government shouting free public transport from midnight to dawn on New Year's Day.

More than 800 extra trains, trams and buses will be in service across Adelaide, along with more than 1000 taxis.

About 100 St John volunteers will provide first aid and medical services at New Year's celebrations across Adelaide and regional areas.
