Free Vic training for handling ice users

Front line workers who deal with violent people on ice can get free training from the Victorian government.

Victorian hospitality staff, police officers and emergency workers will get free online training on how to handle violent ice users.

The number of "code grey" alerts in hospitals for violent aggression has increased significantly over the past few years, mainly due to the drug ice.

Health Minister Jill Hennessy said she wants as many people as possible to get the free training.

"We're hopeful it won't just be the health sector and the justice sector that will utilise this training," Ms Hennessy told reporters on Thursday.

"We know that those in the hospitality sector are also having to deal with customers that are affected by ice."

The $400,000 training package includes examples of how paramedics can work with emergency department staff to minimise the risk of violence.

Ms Hennessy said many front line workers had become desensitised to the violence they saw at work, but that didn't mean they should have to put up with it.

She said the training was designed to be used across sectors.
