French President Emmanuel Macron will make his first visit to Australia next month.

Mr Macron's three-day trip beginning on May 1 will focus on Australia's submarine program and negotiations for an Australia-EU free trade agreement, Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull said on Wednesday.

Foreign Minister Julie Bishop says post-Brexit there will be opportunities for Australia to build deeper economic ties with a number of European countries.

"We have a very deep connection with France already and this is an opportunity for us to further deepen our economic and security ties," she said.

"In the defence industry in particular we are working very closely with France on the submarine project but there are other opportunities."
