Fremantle AFL coach Ross Lyon says there will be plenty of anxiety as star recruit Harley Bennell prepares to make his latest comeback from chronic calf issues.

Bennell hasn't played an AFL match since crossing to Fremantle at the end of 2015, with numerous calf tears threatening his future.

The 24-year-old will feature in his first competitive minutes of the year on Saturday when he lines up for WAFL side Peel Thunder against East Perth.

Bennell is scheduled to play around 60 minutes.

If all goes to plan in coming weeks, Bennell could make his Dockers debut against his former side in the round-20 home clash with Gold Coast.

Bennell was rated several years ago as one of the AFL's most-talented players, but his injury problems and off-field indiscretions have stymied his once-promising career.

Lyon says there is plenty of excitement surrounding Bennell's return, but also a lot of nerves given the past setbacks.

"Obviously, every time we thought he was ok, it (the calf) has gone," Lyon said.

"There'll be some anxiety under there. We're not setting the bar high.

"He's such a gifted player. He's pretty special at what he does. Hopefully, he can build towards a performance.

"But we'll take it minute by minute with Harley with his calves.

"We just want him to get through unscathed. That would be a big win for us."
