Fresh Englishmen aim to lift spirits

England's one-day call-ins are aware they must freshen up a squad that has gone 25 days of gruelling Test cricket without a win.

They are the nine men charged with turning around England's horror cricket tour of Australia and lifting downtrodden spirits.

Led by Eoin Morgan, England's one-day calls-ins of Sam Billings, Jos Buttler, Alex Hales, Liam Plunkett, Adil Rashid, Jason Roy, David Willey and Mark Wood are under no illusions of what they must do.

England have gone through a gruelling 25 days of Ashes cricket for no win, and the seven players remaining from their Test squad are desperately hoping for a fresh start in Melbourne's one-day series opener on Sunday.

Buttler knows the limited-over specialists can play an important role in recharging the squad both on and off the field during the five ODIs.

"I think (we have to)," Buttler said.

"We're proud people and a proud country, so we want to come and win games of cricket.

"And naturally when guys like myself haven't pulled an England shirt on for a while turned up to training today really excited about being back amongst it and with the group.

"I think that naturally brings a bit of energy to the side and it's down to guys like us to really drive that."

Set to host next year's 50-over World Cup, England officials have put a particular emphasis on their one-day game since being knocked out in the group stages by Bangladesh in 2015.

The group are intent on climbing the world rankings from fourth before the tournament, and can make an immediate impact by leapfrogging Australia to third with a win on Sunday.

"You're always looking to build towards that and as a side trying to get to be the No.1 side in the world gives you a lot of confidence going into a World Cup," Buttler said.

"That's something we're aware of, trying to climb up the rankings and get up to the top of going into a World Cup, that's where we want to be."
