Friend accused of Qld chef's murder

A man has faced court charged with murdering Brisbane chef Peter Milos.

The man accused of murdering Brisbane chef Peter Milos will remain in custody until his next court date in July.

James Thomas Howell, a friend of Mr Milos, sat with his back to the public gallery during his first court appearance on Thursday, at times sinking his head into his hands.

The two had been friends since late 2013 and lived in the same east Brisbane suburb, but their relationship took a tragic turn on May 4 when Howell visited Mr Milos' Morningside home in Brisbane's east.

Howell, a 35-year-old New Zealander, is accused of violently murdering Mr Milos with a number of weapons.

Mr Milos's battered body was found two days later.

Howell was arrested on Wednesday.

Detective Acting Superintendent of Homicide Damien Hansen said on Wednesday the two had been in regular contact in the days before Mr Milos' death.

Howell did not apply for bail in the Brisbane Magistrates Court and the matter was adjourned until July 21.

Mr Milos was the former co-owner with his brother of the upmarket Mariosarti restaurant in Toowong.
