Brisbane chef Peter Milos was violently killed by a friend, it's been alleged.
The 26-year-old former restaurateur opened the door to the unnamed mate on the afternoon of Sunday May 4, only to be murdered using a number of weapons.
His battered body was found two days later.
Police made a breakthrough in the case on Wednesday morning after forensic examinations and reviewing CCTV footage close to Mr Milos' Morningside home.
Acting Detective Superintendent of Homicide Damien Hansen said the two had known each other since late 2013 but it was not a work relationship.
They had been in contact in the days leading up to Mr Milos' death.
"They were friends, they were known to each other," Det Hansen said.
The 35-year-old New Zealander, who lived in the same suburb as Mr Milos, is due to appear in the Brisbane Magistrates court on Thursday morning.
The accused was identified early in the investigation and had previously given evidence to police.
"Probably in the last week he came to our attention," Det Hansen said.
"He provided a version (of events), but certainly other evidence came to light that implicated him and that's resulted in today's arrest," Det Hansen said.
Mr Milos was the former co-owner with his brother of the upmarket Mariosarti restaurant in Toowong.
