Sydney Roosters hooker Jake Friend's NRL season could be over after suffering a chest injury in the premiers' 24-12 win over Melbourne on Saturday.

Friend has been diagnosed with a Haemothorax - a collection of blood in the pleural space in the lungs that may be caused by blunt or penetrating trauma.

In a statement released by the Roosters on Sunday, the club said Friend will remain "in hospital while he undergoes further examination.

"The Sydney Roosters can confirm that upon the conclusion of the Roosters v Storm fixture, hooker Jake Friend was last night taken for x-rays, which were cleared, after complaining of shortness of breath," the statement read.

"Friend was later taken to hospital when the symptoms continued and has been diagnosed with a Haemothorax.

"He remains in hospital while he undergoes further examination."
