'Frustrating' Cooks licence rule changed

A Cook Islands rule forcing tourists to get a local licence to drive a vehicle rather than their own country's licence has been revoked for many visitors.

Aussies holidaying in the Cook Islands are being spared the long-standing need to get a local driver's licence before they hit the road.

Australians, along with visitors from New Zealand, the USA, Canada, Britain and the EU can now drive in the Cook Islands using their own licences.

Previously they had to get a local licence from police in Rarotonga.

Graeme West of the Cook Islands Tourism Corporation in New Zealand says the change reflects the fact road rules in the Cook Islands are similar to those in the areas.

"Having to first obtain a local licence was frustrating for some people, especially returning visitors and we know they will really welcome this change."

The new rules mean people can use their licence to drive the same class of vehicle they're allowed to use in their own country.
