Assistant Treasurer Josh Frydenberg says the Abbott government remains committed to cutting government spending, but that won't prevent it putting forward a new childcare package.

Just days after Prime Minister Tony Abbott said this May's budget will be "dull", Mr Frydenberg was asked whether the government remains committed to spending cuts in this budget.

"Absolutely," Mr Frydenberg told Network Ten on Sunday.

"We have to lower it and ultimately we are cutting it."

The government is also promising a childcare package to help get hundreds of thousands of women back into the workforce.

"Getting affordable and accessible childcare will be in the best interest of the economy and will help grow the economy," he said.
