The cost for dismantling the Fukushima nuclear plant will exceed an estimate of two trillion yen ($A25.2 billion), the Japanese Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry says.
The new estimate exceeds the initial calculation of $US766 million ($A1.0 billion) per year - for over 30 years - by the plant's operator Tokyo Electric Power (TEPCO) for the entire process.
The 2011 accident at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant in Japan, caused by an earthquake and a tsunami, has been the worst since Chernobyl in 1986.
The consequent emissions and radioactive leaks have adversely affected the region around the plant, with thousands of people still displaced and industries such as agriculture, livestock and fishing hit.
