Gajdosova in comeback win at Eastbourne

Australian Jarmila Gajdosova has scored a spirited comeback win in her first-round match at the rain-marred Eastbourne International.

Jarmila Gajdosova has produced a spirited comeback to join fellow Australian Casey Dellacqua in the second round of the Eastbourne International.

Gajdosova overcame a rain delay and a sluggish start to beat American Lauren Davis 2-6 6-2 6-1 in a clash of two qualifiers on Monday.

After enjoying a first-round bye, Australian No.1 Samantha Stosur, the 16th seed at the key Wimbledon warm-up event on England's south coast, will open her campaign on Tuesday against Bulgarian Tsvetana Pironkova.

Pironkova eliminated Kiwi qualifier Marina Erakovic 6-2 6-2 in one of just nine matches completed on Monday.

Former Australian Open runner-up Dominika Cibulkova made a successful return from foot surgery with a 6-1 6-3 win over English teenage wildcard Harriet Dart.

Dual grand slam champion Svetlana Kuznetsova beat Slovakian Magdalena Rybarikova 7-6 (7-5) 6-4, US qualifier Irina Falconi ousted Romanian Alexandra Dulgheru 6-1 6-1 and Slovenia's Polona Hercog beat American Madison Brengle 7-5 6-4.

The tournament also lost top-seeded Wimbledon titleholder Petra Kvitova because of illness.

Kvitova said she started feeling ill when she arrived in Britain last Thursday and her withdrawal leaves the Czech without a match since falling in the fourth round of the French Open three weeks ago.

"I have to still think positively and I hope I'm going to be ready for Wimbledon," Kvitova said.

"I have to stay in bed and drink tea and rest. I had to make this decision. I hope to be fine for Wimbledon."
