Gallen one of NSW's toughest: Daley

Laurie Daley says Paul Gallen is one of NSW's toughest ever State of Origin players.

NSW coach Laurie Daley says skipper Paul Gallen is one of the toughest players ever to pull on the Blues jersey.

Gallen came into State Of Origin II on Wednesday having played little football in the last two months but still helped inspire the Blues to their 26-18 win at the MCG.

Gallen left the field early in the first half due to a rib injury, but returned to make 133m from 17 runs and 36 tackles.

"He's always been our spiritual leader," Daley said.

"Not only does he lead on the field, but he's got a presence and that's what people have when they're leaders.

"He wanted to get out there straight away (after having a painkilling injection). He got some treatment and he was filthy that we kept him off as long as we did.

"We've had some tough players, but he'll certainly go down as one of the toughest."

Gallen is confident the injury won't keep him out of the Origin decider in Brisbane on July 8.

"The fact I was able to come back on means I don't think it is too bad," Gallen said.

"Nate (Myles) got me in the back early on and I felt something pop. I'll just have to wait and see how it pulls up, but I should be fine.

"I was okay out there. My role has probably changed a bit now, I don't have to try and do everything out there.

"I've just got to lead the boys and show them the way and I managed to do that without having to play my usual game."
