Cronulla skipper Paul Gallen has been ruled out of Monday's NRL clash with South Sydney due to a badly bruised hip.

The 33-year-old sustained the injury in training and his absence is a big blow for the Sharks' pack which is also missing suspended prop Andrew Fifita, and David Fifita, who broke his leg in last Friday's win over Newcastle.

Utility forward Tinirau Arona is likely to come in to the side as a replacement for Gallen.
