Gallen says no to Sharks supersub

Cronulla captain Paul Gallen believes it'd be a waste of an interchange to have a utility on the bench for the new NRL season.

Former Dally M winner Ben Barba or rising star Jack Bird is likely to be squeezed out of Cronulla's NRL season-opener against North Queensland, according to skipper Paul Gallen.

Bird has the inside running on the No.1 jumper following his impressive trial form, leaving Barba as a probable utility, however Gallen says he'd prefer neither of them be left on the bench.

"Four forwards on the bench is the way to go if you've got a hooker that could play 80 minutes and we certainly do ... I don't see them having a Ben Barba or Jack Bird on the bench," he said on Wednesday.
