Western Bulldogs coach Luke Beveridge says he will invite his close friend and former Hawthorn charge Brent Guerra to the Western Bulldogs to warn the players of the dangers of gambling.
This week, two-time Hawthorn premiership player Guerra revealed he had lost about $400,000 in four years of heavy punting during the last years of his AFL career.
Beveridge, who had mentored Guerra when he was a backline coach at Hawthorn, said gambling had become a "huge concern" in the AFL.
"It's a huge concern because of the down time that our players have and the amount of disposable income they have," said Beveridge."There is a lot of things that we can do to help guys who are vulnerable.
"Brent and I are really close and he is one of the players that I coached when I was coaching their backline.
"I knew he liked to punt but I didn't have any idea of the gravity of it. So I will call him next week."
Beveridge hopes Guerra will share his story with the players to warn them of the dangers of gambling.
"There might be an opportunity for Brent to come down and talk to our players about his experience and help our guys and ward off the possibility of it happening to them because the risks are always there.
"Anything we can do, the AFL, the AFLPA to help our players, we should explore it."
