Games worth wait for netball's Robinson

Australian netballer Madi Robinson is thrilled to finally gain a Commonwealth Games berth after missing selection for Delhi four years ago.

If good things come to those who wait then Australian netballer Madi Robinson has a lot of good coming her way.

The 26-year-old is set for her Commonwealth Games debut in Glasgow four years after missing out on selection for the last event in Delhi.

Compounding her disappointment she was also pipped for a spot in Australia's triumphant World Championship team in 2011 despite being a regular in the Diamonds' set-up.

The Melbourne Vixens midcourt star said she had used the disappointment as motivation to become a better player.

"After missing out I had that little bit of extra motivation so there was a little bit of relief when the team was announced," said Robinson at the launch of the Lumo Energy Netball Victoria Association Championships.

"It felt like a weight had been lifted off my shoulders because the Comm Games and the world champs are the two biggest things on the netball calendar so it's a dream come true."

She believed the experience had made her more mentally tough and she felt that she now thrived under the pressure of being an Australian player.

All the talk is about the Diamonds wresting the gold medal from arch-rivals New Zealand, who won in both Delhi and Melbourne in 2006.

Robinson said that the Australians also had to be wary of England, who won bronze medals at both events and will have a lot of local support.

She recalled that on their tour of England last year an under-strength Australian side was beaten 3-0.

"England are definitely on the up and a lot of their players are playing in the ANZ Championships so that's strengthening their group," she said.

"We thrive as a group under that pressure and we want to be the team that gets the gold because it's definitely over-due."
