Garcia survives WTA opener in Luxembourg

Fourth-seeded Caroline Garcia was taken to three sets before beating Anett Kontaveit of Estonia 7-6 (7-2) 2-6 6-4 in the first round of the Luxembourg Open.

The Frenchwoman needed almost two and a half hours to beat Kontaveit, who is ranked 96 places below Garcia - 121 against 25.

Francesca Schiavone of Italy comfortably defeated fifth-seeded Laura Siegemund of Germany 6-2, 6-2.

Monica Niculescu, Anna Karolina Schmiedlova, Varvara Lepchenko and Denisa Allertova also advanced.
