Gardening tip of the week

Keep an eye on maturing bean and squash plants, and harvest pods and fruit regularly to keep the plants cropping. Both are afflicted with a ladybird-like pest. Handpick and destroy Mexican bean beetles and squash beetles as they appear to prevent a buildup of populations. Unchecked bean beetles, in particular, can cause extensive damage.
