Garland inks new Demons deal until 2018

Melbourne defender Colin Garland has signed a new deal to play with the Demons until at least the end of 2018 and believes finals football isn't far away.

Melbourne defender Colin Garland will remain a Demon until at least the end of the 2018 AFL season after signing a three-year deal.

Garland, who has played 135 matches for Melbourne since making his AFL debut in 2007, said he wasn't interested in playing with another club despite watching former Demon James Frawley win a flag in his first season with Hawthorn.

"I told my manager I didn't want to speak to any other club, but it's funny after seeing one of my great mates (Frawley) win a premiership on the weekend because you have to be envious of success," Garland told Melbournefc.com.au

"I was watching the game and people said, `Wouldn't you love success?' and I said it wouldn't mean anything to me unless it was with Melbourne."

Garland said he believed the Demons could make the AFL finals in 2016 and he wanted to be a part of it.

The 27-year-old Garland, who was a restricted free agent, said he'd probably see out his career with Melbourne.

"I'm all in now and I'll do everything I can over the next three or four years to help bring the young guys on under Roosy (Paul Roos) and then Simon Goodwin."

Demons manager of football operations Josh Mahoney said Garland had become an integral member of the club's backline.

"His performance on the field and the mentoring role he plays with our young defenders has become very important," Mahoney said.

"We look forward to him continuing to improve as a player and also helping our young defenders even further."
