Gas smell sparks alert in Adelaide

A possible gas leak has sparked an emergency alert in Adelaide's western suburbs.

Two schools and a nursing home in Adelaide have been urged to keep people inside after reports of a possible gas leak.

The Metropolitan Fire Service says it received multiple emergency calls on Monday over a strong gas smell at suburban Seaton and surrounding areas.

Some nearby roadworks were initially thought to be the cause but have since been ruled out with fire crews unable to pinpoint the source of the gas.

A spokeswoman says the smell is dissipating and is expected to continue to do so.

However, she says people in the area should close all doors and windows until the smell has passed.
