Gatecrasher found guilty of 3m bar attack

A gatecrasher has been found guilty of the vicious attack in Sydney that left youngster Liam Knight with a three-metre bar lodged in his head.

A gatecrasher has been found guilty of an attack which left Sydney teenager Liam Knight with a three-metre bar lodged in his skull.

His co-accused, however, has been found not guilty.

DS, who was dressed in a black suit, hung his head and lent forward as his guilty verdict was read out.

Meanwhile his co-accused, Jimmy Angelo Tupou, 19, let out a sigh of relief when he was found not guilty of three charges, including using unlawful violence while in company with DS.

He hugged his supporters in court.

DS will face sentencing next month.

Liam was one of about 70 guests celebrating the 18th birthday of his friend Harry Staples in Forestville in Sydney's north on January 11 last year when things went horribly wrong.

After gatecrashing the party by scaling the property's six-metre back fence, a then 17-year-old boy - known only as DS - climbed onto the roof of a shed.

From here, he began throwing building material, such as metal reinforcing bars into the partygoers.

Moments later, a three-metre "rebar" pierced Liam's skull and lodged itself into his head.

Liam has suffered permanent brain damage as a result.

At the beginning of their judge-alone District Court trial in a Sydney last month, DS pleaded guilty to several assaults but not guilty to causing grievous bodily harm with intent to Liam.

But on Friday, Acting Judge Ronald Solomon found DS was responsible for throwing the rebar that struck Liam and that he had done so with intent.

DS, he said, was in an "aggressive state", swearing at partygoers and was seen throwing the bars in a "javelin manner".
