Prop James Gavet has joined Newcastle's burgeoning pack on a two-year deal after he was formally released by the Warriors.

The Knights unveiled the 29-year-old on Friday afternoon effective immediately, having signed him until the end of the 2020 NRL season.

His signature will bolster the Knights' forward depth with the club also believed to be on the verge of signing NSW and Australian prop David Klemmer from Canterbury.

"It's no secret the front row was an area we are looking to strengthen next season," Knights list manager Troy Pezet said.

"James adds a lot to our squad He's a big body who plays with a lot of aggression and energy.

"Last season was a breakout year for James. We feel we're getting him at the right time. He's starting to play some his best football and still has room for growth."

With Nathan Brown's roster also boasting Queensland forward Tim Glasby, Herman Ese'ese and emerging twin brothers Daniel and Jacob Saifiti, the Knights will have significant forward power at their disposal.

Gavet has played 56 NRL games since making his debut with the Bulldogs in 2012, but has come into his own in the past two years at the Warriors.

"James has been a good servant of this club and always gave it his all on the footy field," Warriors chief executive Cameron George said.

"But he's been given a great opportunity and we wish him all the best for the future."
