Gavrilova advances in Pan Pacific Open

Daria Gavrilova has advanced to the second round of the Pan Pacific Open after defeating Kristyna Pliskova.

Daria Gavrilova has booked a clash with world No.8 Karolina Pliskova at the Pan Pacific Open after grinding out a first-round win over her sister Kristyna.

The Australian won 7-6(2) 3-6 7-6(8) in a match that lasted almost three hours against the Czech wildcard in Tokyo on Monday.

In other games, Garbine Muguruza advanced after beating sixth seed Belinda Bencic 6-2 6-4 and Anett Kontaveit defeated Kristina Mladenovic 6-3 7-6(5).

Caroline Wozniacki is the top-seeded player and Caroline Garcia is No.2. Both had byes in the first round.

Third-seeded Naomi Osaka, who won the US Open just more than a week ago, also had a bye in the first round.

Australia's Ashleigh Barty faces CoCo Vandeweghe in her first-round clash on Tuesday.
